Should I do spinal traction after a car accident?

Back and neck pain are the most common human ailment in the world. Over 80% of us will have it at some point in our lifetime. With all the different options for treatment, it can be difficult to know which one to go with.

One tool we like to use here in our office is spinal traction.

The idea behind it is relatively simple.spine traction car accident

In between each vertebra in the spine is a disc. That’s the joint where all the movement happens (or at least it’s supposed to happen). The outside of the disk is made up of thin, tough fibers like the radials of a tire. The inside of the disc has the consistency of toothpaste.

Where there is damage to the outside layers of the disc, the material inside can come out, like stepping on a jelly donut. This material can then press on the nerves as they exit the spine and cause neck pain, lower back pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hands and feet and other symptoms.

Spinal traction distracts the spine lengthwise (from head to toe) to suck the disc material back inside the disc. This takes the pressure off the nerves and helps alleviate symptoms. When combined with chiropractic adjustments, this is a very powerful and helpful therapy.

At Atlanta Spine Group, we utilize spinal traction along with several other therapies to help your body heal following an injury. Whether you live in West End, Westview, Ashview Heights, Dixie Hills or Adair Park, we’re just a short drive away.
