An x-ray is an x-ray, right? Well, it’s not quite that simple.
If you’ve never had x-rays taken, chances are you’ve at least seen them on TV. The doctor takes a large piece of film out and sticks it up on a bright background to see the image. The thing is, the machines that produce those film images are outdated and don’t work nearly as well as the new technology.
When it comes to x-rays, not all machines are created equal. In fact, the top of the line x-ray units are now digital, and they’re far better than the old conventional ones for several reasons.
- Less Radiation
Every time you get an x-ray you’re exposed to a small amount of radiation (“X” radiation, to be exact). The amount of radiation exposure from digital units is quite a bit less than their conventional counterparts
- Clearer Image
The resolution on digital x-ray machines is quite amazing! It’s produces a much clearer picture. Additionally, the software allows the reader to zoom in and out and change the contrast and tint, just like on a television set. This makes is much less likely that the person reading the x-rays will miss something important, like a fracture.
- Immediately Available and Easy to Transport
With the old equipment, after the x-ray was taken it would need to be developed, just like your mom’s old camera from 1984. Now with the advent of digital x-ray, the images appear on a computer screen within a matter of seconds. What’s even better is that these images can be sent electronically to be read by highly trained professionals and returned within a matter of minutes. All this makes it easier and more time efficient for the doctor and patient.
Here at Atlanta Spine Group, we’re committed to helping our patients achieve the best results possible, and that starts with a full and accurate diagnosis of your injuries. That’s why we have a digital x-ray unit right here in our office. All of our x-rays are sent out to specialists for review so we know exactly what you need to heal.
If you want to know what neuromuscular reeducation is and what it does, check out our last blog. Here we will explore how we go about reestablishing proper communication between the brain and muscles.
The first tool we use is balance training. That’s right, we work with our patients to improve their sense of balance. You may be asking yourself, “what does balance have to do with back pain?!?!”, and that’s a great question. The answer is, it has A LOT to do with it!
When muscles are damaged, as in the case of whiplash or other injures as a result of a car accident, there is a disruption between the brain’s communication with the muscles. That is NOT a good thing.
Even after the pain is gone, the brain’s ability to communicate with the muscles is compromised. If proper communication is not restored, it can lead to many future problems and pain.
By working with balance, we are reestablishing that proper communication between brain and body.
You can think of it like practicing a sport. The more a baseball pitcher practices throwing a certain way, the more likely he will throw that way in the future. That happens because he is training his brain to communicate with his muscles in a specific way.
The same thing is happening with balance training, but instead of training for a sport, we’re training for everyday life.
While we here at Atlanta Spine Group focus primarily on chiropractic as our means of rehabilitating our patients, we have several other techniques and pieces of equipment to aid us in that process.
One of our patient favorites is our roller massage table. While it does feel great and is very relaxing, it also helps restore proper motion to each joint in the spine. Restoring proper spinal motion is a critical part of injury rehabilitation. In fact, without proper spinal motion, the effectiveness of other rehabilitative techniques decreases. That’s why we use this particular device early on in our treatment plans. It helps make our other rehab techniques more effective as time goes on.
Neuromuscular reeducation – say that 3 times fast!
While it may be a mouthful to say, it’s an invaluable resource for rehabilitating spinal injuries. This technique is not only effective for treating low back pain and neck pain, but it’s even more important when it comes to preventing these ailments from coming back.
So, what is neuromuscular reeducation? Well, it’s all in the name.
- Neuro – nervous system
- Muscular – muscles
- Reeducation – to educate again
The nervous system (brain and nerves) control every part of our bodies, including all the muscles. An injury to the muscles (car accident, etc.) disrupts this communication, which is a very bad thing.
This miscommunication not only prevents proper healing but can also lead to MANY problems in the future. We now know that proper long-term healing and tissue repair depends on reestablishing this communication.
Check out our next blog to see how we accomplish this in our office!
Chiropractic care is a safe and gentle way to correct the underlying structural problems that cause back pain, neck pain and headaches. Still though, there are people out there that are apprehensive about trying chiropractic.
One common complaint from patient’s is the “twisting and cracking” of the spine that happens during the adjustment.
Here at Atlanta Spine Group, all our adjustments are very specific and very gentle. But, for those patients that are still uncomfortable with ANY amount of “twisting and cracking”, we have multiple ways to accommodate them.
We often use the device pictured above. The tip of the instrument rapidly vibrates and delivers the adjustment to the spine. It is very effective and requires no twisting, turning or “cracking”. Many of our patients actually prefer it to the traditional form of adjusting the spine by hand.
Regardless of your preference, we work with each patient’s personal preference to ensure maximum comfort and peace of mind.

If you’ve been involved in a car accident in the West End of Atlanta, chances are that a chiropractor trained in whiplash management is your best bet to help you heal and get you back to living your life.
Unfortunately, there’s more to handling your PI case than just healing from neck pain, low back pain and whiplash.
When it comes to taking care of the legal side of things, there’s no one better positioned to help you than a competent personal injury attorney.
Many patients don’t want the hassle of dealing with a lawyer to collect from an insurance company, but oftentimes the real hassle comes from trying to go it alone.
Think of it this way: Michael Jordan is regarded by most people as the greatest basketball player that ever lived. However, no matter how great he was on the court, he entrusted his agent to negotiate his contract. Why, you ask? It’s because Michael Jordan is a basketball player, not a sports agent!
MJ understood that he could trust himself to sink a game-winning shot, but to get the most out of his contract, he needed to trust his agent. Even though a percent of his earnings would go to his agent, he knew that his agent would be able to negotiate for a greater sum than what he would have “saved” by doing it himself. The result: more money in his pocket at the end of the day.
Insurance companies have become excellent at withholding money and getting you, the client, to settle for far less than you should. Not only will hiring a competent personal injury attorney take away the hassle and uncertainty of dealing with the insurance company directly, but more often than not it will ensure you receive the settlement you actually deserve, not what the insurance company thinks you deserve.
Whether you’re involved in a car accident the West End or another part of Atlanta, taking care of your health is the most important thing. For that, there are competent chiropractors that specialize in treating back pain, neck pain and whiplash. But when it comes to choosing the best personal injury, or PI attorney to handle your car accident case, there are a few simple things to look for when making your choice.
- No matter if you’re looking for someone to fix your sink or do your taxes, it’s always best to seek out a specialist. Beware of lawyers that seem like a “Jack of all trades”. If you’re searching the internet and find a lawyer that practices PI and about 7 other areas of law, think twice about taking them on. They might be spread too thin to do any one of those things perfectly.
- Look for an attorney that has been in practice in the state of Georgia for at least 5 years. Laws vary from state to state, and you want an attorney on your side that understands the nuances of GA law.
- It should go without saying, but it’s important to trust your gut when it comes to your attorney. Don’t be afraid to meet with a few attorneys before deciding who you want to handle your case. If you feel like you can’t trust them, don’t mesh well with their personality or simply think you’ll be treated like a number instead of a person, trust your gut. There are many excellent PI attorneys in the area that will treat you with the respect and compassion you deserve. After all, it’s your life and your health – you deserve your peace of mind!
