How much is enough for a car accident to get treatment?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a patient tell me that they were just in a “little” accident. They really don’t feel there’s a need to get an examination because there wasn’t really much damage to their car.

The thing is, it doesn’t matter! All the current research is very clear on this subject.

The damage to vehicles caused in collisions is NO INDICATION of the extent of the injuries imposed on the passengers.

None.

As a matter of fact, it makes more sense that the less damage is done to your car, the more damage may be done to your body.

That may seem odd at first, but it actually makes a lot of sense. When you are sitting in a car that is rear ended, according to the laws of physics the force coming from the other vehicle has to go somewhere. It doesn’t just disappear. If your car suffers significant crumpling, then your car actually absorbed the impact and spared your body and neck. If your car didn’t crumple and there wasn’t much damage, then all that force gets transferred directly into your body, and that can mean much more significant injuries for you.

Unfortunately, cars are actually being built to be more ridged these days because auto dealers know that you don’t want to pay a lot of money for repairs. The problem is, all that force is going somewhere and what you save on car repairs you will spend on repairing your body.

Auto Accident Injury Treatment

Why does pain move around after a car accident?

“The pain started in my neck, but last week my hip started hurting and now, my lower back is killing me…WHAT’S GOING ON?!?!”

I’ve heard this same question so many times in my office that I’ve started to give the answer to my patients on their very first day of treatment, before they even have the chance to ask!

When it comes to injures that have been sustained from a major trauma, such as a car accident, it is VERY common for the symptoms to change over the course of care. The reason this happens is twofold.

  1. Altered ambulatory kinetics

Say what??? Altered ambulatory kinetics is just a fancy way of saying “compensation”. Think of it this way, you’re in a car accident and your hip is injured by the belt strap on impact. You’ve got bruising and pain deep in the joint. You can’t walk without limping. Well, when you walk with a limp, every muscle in your body has to compensate in some way so you can get around.

That compensation means some muscles do less work than normal and some do more. Those muscles that do more work get cranky and sore (similar to going to the gym and exercising strenuously for a week after more than a year of not working out at all).

So it’s totally possible for that initial hip injury to eventually cause pain in the lower back or knee simply from forcing you to alter the way you walk.

  1. You’re actually feeling better

It may sound strange, but just follow me. Let’s say you’ve got neck and back pain. The intensity of your neck pain is 8/10 and your back pain is 3/10 with 10 being the worst. If that’s the case, you’re probably not really thinking much at all about the back pain because the neck pain is so bad! After a month of treatment your neck pain and back pain are both 3/10. Now all of a sudden you can really feel that back pain because the neck pain is doing much better. It can feel like the back pain is new, but it was there all along. The higher intensity neck pain was just masking it.

What’s the cost in a car accident for chiropractic in Atlanta?

The word “confusing” doesn’t even begin to describe the process people go through when trying to get treatment for injuries sustained in a car accident. It certainly doesn’t help matters when insurance companies can be less than helpful.

One of the most confusing parts (and a question every patient wants to know) is, what’s the cost?

The most honest answer (and one that can be frustrating to explain) is, it depends.

Every situation is different and some are not entirely clear cut when it comes to bodily injury insurance coverage. That’s why here at Atlanta Spine Group, we offer a complimentary consultation with Dr. Ritola to talk about the specifics of your case BEFORE you commit to treatment.

We want you to be comfortable and to answer all of your questions before proceeding to an examination. Your peace of mind is actually an important part of the healing process, and not one we take lightly.

But here’s the GREAT news…the majority of the time there is ZERO out of pocket expense to our patients. We can often get you started right away without you ever having to fork over a cent. We simply collect from the insurance company or from your lawyer. It’s just that simple.

Stop in today or give us a call at 678=902-6722 to schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Ritola. You’ve got absolutely nothing to lose!

spine traction car accident

Should I do spinal traction after a car accident?

Back and neck pain are the most common human ailment in the world. Over 80% of us will have it at some point in our lifetime. With all the different options for treatment, it can be difficult to know which one to go with.

One tool we like to use here in our office is spinal traction.

The idea behind it is relatively simple.spine traction car accident

In between each vertebra in the spine is a disc. That’s the joint where all the movement happens (or at least it’s supposed to happen). The outside of the disk is made up of thin, tough fibers like the radials of a tire. The inside of the disc has the consistency of toothpaste.

Where there is damage to the outside layers of the disc, the material inside can come out, like stepping on a jelly donut. This material can then press on the nerves as they exit the spine and cause neck pain, lower back pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hands and feet and other symptoms.

Spinal traction distracts the spine lengthwise (from head to toe) to suck the disc material back inside the disc. This takes the pressure off the nerves and helps alleviate symptoms. When combined with chiropractic adjustments, this is a very powerful and helpful therapy.

At Atlanta Spine Group, we utilize spinal traction along with several other therapies to help your body heal following an injury. Whether you live in West End, Westview, Ashview Heights, Dixie Hills or Adair Park, we’re just a short drive away.

Can a car accident affect neck posture?

More and more patients that come into my office are, in one way or another, familiar with the term “text neck”. Some admit to having heard the words, but aren’t exactly sure what they mean.
Text neck is caused by a number of things, one of the big ones is from looking down at your phone or other device when you send a text or check Facebook or email. There are several other causes, like sitting at a desk all day, slouching forward on the couch while watching TV, and the list goes on – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKjhifbHfF8

Text neck, or what we call Anterior Head Syndrome is actually a major health concern, and there are many reasons why. Check out these very short videos explaining some of the negative effects:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR-4JkxmXoQ

What most people don’t know is that whiplash can actually cause this as well. Whiplash causes damage to the muscles on the back of the neck which results in them being weakened. That weakening results in a straightening of the natural “C”-shaped curve of the neck, which is actually the first phase of spinal arthritis!
This is one of the biggest reasons to have your spine checked by a chiropractor after you’ve been in a car accident. Without treatment, spinal arthritis will progress until degenerative changes appear that cannot be reversed.
If you’ve been involved in a car crash, get checked as soon as possible!
